Making Yoga & Yoga Therapy Accessible to All in North Cornwall
What is Yoga Therapy?
According to the British Council for of Yoga Therapy:
“Yoga Therapy is the use of Yoga where there is a specific health need or needs.”
Yoga therapy is essentially a tool for empowerment – the timeless practices of asana, pranayama, mantra, mudra and meditation are brought together in ways that are relevant to the individual and their needs.
Yoga therapy is a whole-person discipline. It recognises the interdependent nature of our physical, mental and emotional health, and works with the individual rather than simply focusing on a condition or diagnosis.
Yoga therapy meets the individual where they are. My role as a yoga therapist is to be a compassionate guide, offering support, curiosity and practical tools to help you develop greater awareness, resilience and wellbeing.
My approach is informed by 20 years of teaching Yoga, five years as a Yoga therapist and experience of how trauma and life experiences can be held and expressed through the body. I also supervise Yoga therapy students in training.
What can I expect from my first yoga therapy session?
The first session lasts 90 minutes and is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin to understand what you would like support with.
Your health, wellbeing, lifestyle and what has brought you to yoga therapy will be explored. We may also look at:
-
habitual patterns of posture and movement through a gentle body reading
-
general joint mobility, where appropriate
-
your breathing patterns and relationship with the breath
-
practices specifically selected and adapted for you and your needs
-
You will be encouraged to explore these practices at home before our next session, giving you an opportunity to notice how they feel and what you discover through practising them.
We would usually finish with a relaxation or meditation practice, creating some space to notice what you have experienced and any insights that arise.
There is no expectation that you need to be able to do particular yoga postures. Practices are adapted to meet you where you are.

About access
I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of yoga, whatever their circumstances. Making yoga accessible is an important part of my work through Gentle Yoga Rebellion CIC
I also recognise that specialist one-to-one yoga therapy is not financially accessible to everyone. I am therefore exploring ways to develop funded and subsidised yoga therapy places alongside my private practice, so that this work can reach people who might otherwise be unable to access it.
I would love to hear from individuals, philanthropists, organisations or funders who might be interested in supporting this work and helping to make yoga therapy accessible to people who would otherwise be excluded by cost.
If you would like to know more about supporting this work, please get in touch.
